Open Water Power is a rapidly-developing division of L3Harris. We are pioneering power systems for underwater applications using our novel aluminum-water chemistry. These power systems will revolutionize the deployment and utility of underwater vehicles and sensors.

L3Harris Open Water Power is a small group (about 35 people) of talented and curious engineers, scientists, and technicians who are focused on bringing our power systems to market. We operate as an agile, exciting startup environment supported by the larger L3Harris organization. Our work involves full design and development, from fundamental science and chemical engineering up to manufacture and assembly of complete systems. Job Summary:

We have an immediate opening for an electrical engineer to join our rapidly growing EE team. This role will work closely with other electrical and firmware engineers to help bring our technology out of the lab and into the undersea world. While our aluminum-water chemistry is designed to replace relatively simple batteries, our power modules are much more complex and contain a variety of electrical systems including DC/DC power conversion, embedded computing, motor control, mechanical actuation, high accuracy instrumentation, and autonomous capabilities. Our electronics are designed for high performance and reliability even while operating in the extreme pressure and temperature of the deep-sea environment. It’s crucial that our electrical systems work flawlessly during every single discharge so that the full capability of this game-changing electrochemistry can be realized.

This position will play a part in every stage of the electronics development cycle, from design and testing to revision and finally deployment. A typical day could include anything from designing a circuit or laying out a PCB to testing boost converter efficiency or evaluating motor controllers in the lab. The job is very hands-on, so an eagerness to roll up your sleeves and dive into the hardware is necessary. And because our electrical systems interact directly with many other parts of the power module, you should be comfortable with cross-disciplinary concepts in the areas of mechanical and systems engineering.

Job Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (or similar) with at least 3 years related experience
  • Experience with digital and analog circuit design
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB design/layout in Altium Designer
  • Experience with component library management in Altium Designer
  • Experience with populating, testing, and debugging PCBs
  • Experience with using lab equipment such as scopes, multimeters, power supplies and electronic loads
  • Experience with DC/DC power conversion a plus
  • Experience with brushless DC motor control a plus
  • Candidate must be a US citizen
